Description

Propolis is a resin produced by bees. It contains a mixture of saliva and beeswax. Bees use propolis or “bee glue” as a sealant to seal the gaps in the hive to prevent intruders from entering. If we want to talk about the properties of propolis, we should mention the antimicrobial properties that may protect bees from pathogens. Throughout history, humans have used it topically or as an oral supplement.
What is propolis?
The ingredients in propolis can be complicated. Scientists have identified more than 300 separate compounds in propolis. Its exact composition depends on the location of the hive. Propolis usually contains vegetable gum, beeswax, pollen, essential oil and aromatic oil. It also contains polyphenols such as flavonoids, which are a type of antioxidant.
Properties of propolis
Propolis has been used as medicine since 300 BC. The ancient Egyptians used propolis for embalming, and some doctors used it during World War II to help heal wounds. It may also have antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-parasitic properties against parasitic diseases such as giardiasis, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. Modern research on the properties of propolis has shown that it may be effective for healing minor wounds, oral hygiene, inflammation and cold sores.
wound healing
One study suggests that propolis may help heal wounds. An animal study on diabetic rats showed that propolis helps the skin make new cells to repair itself. Wound healing in diabetics is slow and propolis helps to speed it up. Since propolis also kills some types of bacteria, it may also help prevent infections.
